What to do if you have a water main break/leak?

First, don’t worry. let’s go through a checklist to make sure it is diagnosed as a water main leak.

  1. Look at your water bill and see if it is out of the ordinary.
  2. Locate your water meter and with all the water shut off in your home and outside of your home look to see if the meter is moving.
  3. If it is moving turn off the main water valve going into the home from the city.
  4. If the water meter is still moving at this point you will need to call a plumber to have them better diagnose what is happening.
  5. If the water meter has stopped moving then we need to locate where the leak is.
  6. You can locate where the leak is by having all sources of water turned off and then following the water from the street into the home. Here is a video to help explain how to do that: https://youtu.be/paRM9HpR8kk
