What to do if you have a water main break/leak?

Water Main Repair

First, don’t worry. let’s go through a checklist to make sure it is diagnosed as a water main leak.

  • 1. Look at your water bill and see if it is out of the ordinary.
  • 2. Locate your water meter and with all the water shut off in your home and outside of your home look to see if the meter is moving.
  • 3. If it is moving turn off the main water valve going into the home from the city.
  • 4. If the water meter is still moving at this point you will need to call a plumber to have them better diagnose what is happening.
  • 5. If the water meter has stopped moving then we need to locate where the leak is.
  • 6. You can locate where the leak is by having all sources of water turned off and then following the water from the street into the home. Here is a video to help explain how to do that: https://youtu.be/paRM9HpR8kk
